Chikungunya fever is a disease caused by the chikungunya virus (CHIKV). It is spread by mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. The name “chikungunya” comes from an African language. It means “to become contorted” because the joint pain from the disease can make people bend their bodies in strange ways.

The symptoms of chikungunya fever usually start 2 to 12 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The first symptoms are often a high fever, sometimes as high as 40°C (104°F), along with severe joint pain. The joint pain can be so bad that it makes it difficult for people to move. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, a rash, and feeling very tired.

Most people start to feel better within a week, but for some, the joint pain can last for months or even years. There is no specific medicine to treat chikungunya fever.

1. D            2. B            3. A            4. D            5. D
