| Takeover Day
Want to be a football coach, a policeman or a musician? If you could do any job for a day, what would it be? Takeover Day offers young people this chance. |
|
| Takeover Day is an event for young people to “take over” the day from adults(成年人). Of course, it’s difficult to give someone the job of a film star or a model! However, Takeover Day has offered young people jobs as news reporters, teachers and even politicians(政客).
The event serves two purposes. First, it gives young people experience in different kinds of jobs. Second, adults can learn from young people’s opinions and fresh ideas. Here’s what the students say about their Takeover Day. |
Simon, 16, went to Coventry Football Club. He became coach of the football team for a day: “Having a go at training professional players was an unforgettable experience,” said Simon. “If I had the chance, I would do this job every day.” |
| Sally, 15, became the head teacher of her school. “I’d go mad if I were a head teacher!” she said. “So many meetings!” Sally thinks she learned a lot. “My favorite part of the day was meeting the school cook and improving the school menus for the week. It was a great chance to tell her what we really like eating!” | |
| Paul, 17, spent the day with an important politician. He even went to a meeting at Buckingham Palace! Paul thought that if everyone had the chance to follow a politician for a day, they’d be amazed. “It isn’t a nine-to-five job. It’s 24/7,” he said “We even had no time for lunch.” | |
26. What may Simon choose to be in the future?

On Monday, I stopped my car in front of my son David’s middle school. He jumped onto the back seat and he asked me to help his study for his chemistry test.
“Mom, I need to remember all the chemistry experiments. And I can hardly make it.”
“You know, memorizing seems like the best way to study, but in fact you can do better in exams if you work on trying to understand the knowledge.”
David was open to my advice. it was Monday afternoon and we had two nights to study before the test on Wednesday. I suggested a plan. “Tomorrow night, you are going to teach the chemistry experiments to me. Tonight, read the textbook. Prepare to teach.”
Asking him to teach me was an unusual idea, but I made a decision to do it. Studies show teaching somebody else is a very useful way to learn. Even if you don’t do the teaching, the act of preparing to teach leads to more learning than just trying your best to memorize the knowledge.
On Tuesday afternoon, David sat down with his chemistry book facing me and said, “Okay Mum, let’s study.” I wanted him to teach me. But false starts happened. I couldn’t be too hard on him. So instead we started with me asking him some simple questions. He knew some but not others. When he didn’t know the answers, I encouraged him to check the book.
He started checking things that didn’t make sense. And he was actively trying to test his understanding. I was happy to see it. He wasn’t memorizing; he was trying to make sense of things, which was exactly what I had hoped he would do.
31. Why did David ask his mother to help his study for his chemistry exam?
A. Because he didn’t pass the chemistry test.
B. Because he had trouble remembering the chemistry experiments.
C. Because he knew little about the chemistry experiments.
D. Because he couldn’t understand his teacher in class.
32. In the mother’s opinion, which was the best way to study?
A. Memorizing. B. Testing. C. Questioning. D. Understanding.
33. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refers to “__________”.
A. making him remember the knowledge B. asking him some simple questions
C. asking him to teach me D. encouraging him to check the book
34. What does the writer mean by saying “I couldn’t be too hard on him.” in Paragraph 6?
A. It was hard for me to understand David.
B. It was hard for David to make me understand him.
C. I should be strict with David.
D. I should be patient with David.
35. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. A Creative Mother B. Difficult experiments
C. Learning from Teaching D. Preparing for Teaching

Have you ever imagined going inside of a video game? That dream may soon become real. It’s called the “metaverse(元宇宙)”.
The metaverse is a shared virtual(虚拟的) 3D world. The word is made up of “meta”, which means beyond, and “verse” which refers to “universe”. The word first appeared in a science fiction book called Snow Crash in 1992. In this story, people wear virtual reality(VR) headsets to see and join the metaverse.
Now, what happens in the book is becoming a reality. Wearing a VR headset, you can meet other people wherever they are. You also can work and play with them. It will feel real because the technology(技术) can simulate(模拟) our senses: vision, hearing, touch and even smell.
The metaverse is about creating another reality, another world, that’s as rich as the real world. So, what can you do inside the metaverse? Your location will no longer matter, says VOA News. It means that in the metaverse, people will be connected at all times. You can meet friends from other countries and go on a virtual beach vacation together. You can go to the beach on the moon, or anywhere else you can imagine. Can’t find a friend to play basketball? Jump into the metaverse and find some friends to play with or go to a concert!
Cathy Hack, an expert in metaverse technology, said her son’s first concert was inside a video game. “Although it happened in a video game, it didn’t make it less real for him,” she said.
Perhaps the metaverse will change our idea of what is real.
36. Paragraph 2 tells us _________.
A. how to join the metaverse B. what happened in the book Snow Crash
C. where the word “metaverse” comes from D. when the book Snow Crash came out
