A

When I was a child, my parents read bedtime stories to my sister and me each night. It is one of my favourite childhood memories.

My sister and I had many books. As I grew older, I enjoyed staying in my father’s “library” and would read for hours each day. To make me play with friends like other kids, my parents would have to take books away from me.

I see reading as an important part of my life, not a hobby to pass my time. For me, reading opens up a whole new world. It encourages new ideas, increases my knowledge, and makes me an everyday learner.

Although I enjoy communicating with people, I’m an introverted person and really need my alone time. Last year, I had several experiences that began to make me feel worried about my being shy, and I felt that it would make me lose many chances. Around this time, I read Susan Cain’s book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. This book helped me understand myself. And I’m not afraid to be myself.

Charlie Jones says, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I’ve met great people and travelled around the world — all from my chair or bed with a book in my hands.

11. One of the writer’s favourite childhood memories was ________.

A. watching TV with her sister

B. travelling around the world

C. communicating with people

D. listening to her parents read bedtime stories

12. Why would the writer’s parents stop her from reading?

A. Because she might lose her friends because of reading.

B. Because she liked reading books very much.

C. Because they wanted her to read her own books.

D. Because they thought it didn’t help her with study.

13. What does the writer think of reading?

A. A good way to learn new skills.

B. A favourite hobby in her free time.

C. An activity that makes her popular.

D. A bridge between the world and herself.

14. From the fourth paragraph, we can learn that an introverted person is ________.

A. outgoing                    B. lazy                            C. careless                      D. shy

15. The writer met great people and travelled around the world by ________.

A. writing letters to the great people

B. making friends with others

C. reading books in her chair or on her bed

D. going sightseeing in every holiday

B

Laughing is one of life’s simplest pleasures. It’s free. You can do it anywhere and it makes you feel good. Laughter is infectious (感染的). Often when we hear someone laughing in a crowded room or on a packed train, for example, we start laughing too — even if we have no idea why.

Making others laugh is an act of joy and kindness. However, when people laugh at you, it’s not. That experience is lonely and no fun at all. For example, if Anna is in a funny play and people laugh with her, that’s a good thing. However, if she forgets her lines, people may laugh at her. That isn’t so good. People might even call her a laughingstock (笑柄). No one, not even a professional comedian (喜剧演员), wants to be a laughingstock.

For example, let’s say a boy likes dancing with teddy bears. He records it and accidentally (偶然地) sends it to one of his classmates. The classmate shares the video with others and the boy becomes the laughingstock of the whole school.

But our story doesn’t end there. Someone posts the video online and over 10 million people watch it. Then, the boy gets lots of offers to make advertisements for teddy bears and makes a lot of money. Now, you can say the boy has the last laugh. When you have the last laugh, you end up winning.

Another way to have the last laugh is to simply laugh off a difficult situation. It shows you just don’t care. For example  if the boy is a friend of yours, you can tell him to just laugh it off.

16. Why do we possibly follow someone else to laugh on a packed train?

A. Because laughing is free.

B. Because we have no idea why.

C. Because laughing makes us feel lonely.

D. Because laughter is infectious.

17. From the second paragraph, we can learn that _________.

A. being a laughingstock is fun

B. we shouldn’t laugh

C.laughing at someone is no fun

D. making others laugh is too difficult

18. A professional comedian _________.

A. wants to be a laughingstock

B. wouldn’t like to be a laughingstock

C. likes to laugh at others

D. often forgets the lines

19. If one has the last laugh, he _________ in the end.

A. achieves success

B. is still a laughingstock

C. makes others laugh

D. doesn’t care about the results

20. If someone makes fun of your sister and you want to tell her not to pay too much attention to it, you can say, “_________”.

A. You’re really a laughingstock

B. Hey, just laugh it off.

C. It’s not funny—don’t laugh.

D. You have the last laugh.

C

Scientists say they have had a “conversation” with a humpback whale (座头鲸). The scientists are from the University of California, the Alaska Whale Foundation and the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute 搜寻地球外文明研究所). They teamed up and spoke to a humpback whale named Twain. They spoke to her in “humpback language” for 20 minutes. Their conversation took place after the scientists sent a “contact call” into the ocean off the coast of Alaska. Twain heard the call and responded (回应). She swam to the research boat, circled it and chatted. The SETI Institute said it was the first ever communication between humans and a humpback whale.

The scientists said their conversation with Twain was not a deep one. Professor Brenda Mc Cowan said it was more like a series of greetings. Whales use contact calls to let other whales know where they are. The scientists made the same call 36 times over a 20-minute period. Each time, Twain responded by calling back. She even matched the intervals (间隔) between each call that the researchers made, which greatly surprised the scientists.

Professor Brenda Mc Cowan told the Business Insider website that this research could make it easier to talk to aliens (外星人). She said, “There are many kinds of intelligent beings on this planet. By studying them, we can better understand what aliens might be like.” Based on this research, scientists may identify calls from space and make first contact with aliens in the future.

21. Where did the “conversation” take place?

A. In the SETI Institute

B. In the Alaska Whale Foundation.

C. In the ocean off the coast of Alaska.

D. In the University of California.

22. Which of the following is TRUE about Twain?

A. Twain was in poor condition.

B. Twain jumped out of the water 36 times.

C. Twain responded to the scientist’s call 20 times.

D. Twain was so smart that the scientists all felt surprised.

23. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A.Scientists have received calls from space.

B. There are few intelligent beings on Earth.

C. This research may help humans contact aliens.

D. People can talk with other animals in the future.

24. Which question is answered in this passage?

A. Why do the scientists want to search for aliens?

B. How many scientists took part in the research?

C. What will people do to protect humpback whales?

D. How did the scientists have a “conversation” with Twain?

25. Where is the passage possibly from?

A. A travel guide.                                                  B. A health report.

C. A storybook.                                                     D. A science magazine.
