Passage 1
(24-25九年级上·福建宁德·期末)You’ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you’re a reader, you have another way to learn words. 1 Following some easy steps can help you.
2
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. It might sound like a word you know. Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read, you have the word!
Use context.
If this doesn’t work, take the next step: Look at the context. 1 Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. If the word shelter doesn’t look familiar (熟悉的), look at the words around it. Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
Use word parts.
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. You might know that a mine is a place underground where people get coal and other valuable things. A lot of times, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. 1
Look it up.
1 You can find the word in a dictionary—either a book or online.
Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don’t know.

Get enough Vitamin D
If you’ve got the winter blues, you may find yourself eating more sugar than usual. Scientists have found that people with low vitamin D are at a greater risk of the winter blues. 1

As the days get colder, people are likely to spend more time indoors even on sunny days. But new study has shown that spending time in sunshine plays an important role in beating the winter blues. 3 If you cannot go outdoors, move a chair next to a window that gets sunshine.

In fact, exercise is one of the most important things you can do to stay happy all year long. Passage 3(24-25九年级上·湖南长沙·期末)
You may need to hit snooze button on an alarm each morning to sleep for a few more minutes. Is it the healthiest thing you can do for your sleep? Probably not. 1 However, it could be a sign of a larger problem, like someone is not getting enough sleep.
The fact that you need an alarm tells you that you’re probably not getting the right amount of sleep that your body needs. Sunjay Kansagra, a professor at Duke University, says: “If you feel so sleepy that you need to press snooze, it tells you that you need more sleep.”
1 But those extra minutes of sleep may not actually be that helpful. When a person’s alarm clock goes off in the morning, they may be woken up from rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. REM sleep usually happens later on in a person’s sleep. 2 As a result, pressing snooze repeatedly may actually make people feel more confused. 3 If a person has the extra time to press the snooze button in the morning, Dr. Kansagra said, the healthier option would be to simply get up with one alarm instead of many times. Just set your alarm to the latest possible time you can wake up. Then you can make sure of yourself getting as much sleep as possible. Place your alarm clock further away from your bed so you have to get up to turn it off. 4
A.That’s the experts’ suggestion.
B.Hitting snooze isn’t dangerous.
C.Hitting snooze allows the body to get back to sleep.
D.They may feel more tired after they get out of bed.
E.This is when the brain is active and people often dream.
