One of my favorite things to do is hiking in mountains. Because nobody likes the idea of getting lost, I always prepare before every trip. However, what’s the best navigation tool, a Global Positioning System (GPS) or a good old map and compass?
Five of my friends and I hiked through the mountains on a trail I marked. One team of three carried a GPS, and the other team used a map and compass.
It took the GPS team 3 hours and 11 minutes to get through the whole hike. However, it took the map and compass team only 2 hours and 49 minutes. The biggest problem the GPS team met was that they lost the satellite signal (卫星信号) in some places. With no map or compass, they had to walk around until they were in a place where the signal was good. The map and compass team was able to spot different landmarks, compare them to their maps and then use the compass to point them in the right direction.
When heading out on my future hikes, I’ll bring a map, a compass and a GPS to show me the way.

In southern England there stands a circle of huge stones! Local people call it stonehenge. It’s said that it was built around 5000 years ago.
Stonehenge has about 80 stones and each is about five meters tall. They were 380 km away from where they were made. The ancient British people had only wooden tools. The stones might be moved by tree trunks. So it was a wonder to build stonehenge. Scientists say it took millions of man-hours to move and raise the huge stones.
How did people move these huge stones from so far without machines? Nobody knows the answer. One record said the great stones were carried to England by magical aliens!

It is 40 meters long and 6 meters wide. This must be the biggest bus you have ever seen. It can carry 1,200 to 1,400 people.
It is China’s new Super Bus. It is going for a test run in Beijing at the end of this year. Some other cities are also interested in running the Super Bus. They hope the traffic problems will be solved.
The Super Bus runs along fixed tracks (固定轨道) . The bus sits on top of two 2.2-meter-tall legs. The legs have wheels at one end. Small cars can drive under the bus, so the Super Bus does not take up road space.
The bus runs on electricity and solar power. It can travel up to 60 km every hour. Its creator, Song Youzhou, says a lot of traffic jams (堵塞) will be reduced.
The Super Bus can do the work of 40 buses. In that way, it can save 860 tons of fuel (燃料) every year, according to Song.
“To build a Super Bus and its track costs less than building subways. Subways are nearly ten times more expensive to build.”Song said.
