kiwi bird

People from New Zealand (新西兰) often call themselves “Kiwis”. For most New Zealanders, the word Kiwi is a friendly nickname (昵称) , but where did it come from?

The name comes from the kiwi bird. The bird has a round body and can’t fly. It only lives in New Zealand.

New Zealand already used the bird on the money in the late 19th century. In 1904, the bird was used in a cartoon to represent (代表) the country’s rugby (橄榄球) team. After that, the bird was often shown in cartoons.

kiwifruit

“Kiwi” as a nickname for New Zealanders is usually written with a big letter “K”, while the bird’s name is usually written with a small k: “kiwi”. So the people and the birds don’t get mixed up.

The kiwi fruit, which is from China at the beginning, is also named after the bird. In1959, New Zealanders started calling it “kiwifruit” because its brown skin (皮肤) looks like the bird.

However, it is important not to mix up Kiwi people, kiwi birds and kiwifruit! Although the fruit is usually just called “kiwi” in other parts of the world, New Zealanders only ever call it “kiwifruit”.

They can have different colours and shapes. They can be both red or green, round or sharp, big or small, and more importantly, loved or hated by someone. What can they be? Right, the answer is chilies.

Many of us in China enjoy adding chilies to our food, but do you know that this spicy (辣的) vegetable could also be very dangerous? A 34-year-old US man lost his life in hospital after eating a Carolina Reaper, the spiciest chili. After taking just one bite, the man began to get serious headaches in the following days, reported by BBC News.

In fact, eating spicy food causes stomachache and headache. But if chilies are harmful, why do people eat this vegetable? What makes people love chilies so much? The human body is influenced (被影响) by natural chemicals (化学物质) that produce “a sense of happiness”. That means chili makes them happy.

And chilies do good to people in another way. A study shows that the death rate of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10 percent lower than those who eat it less than once a week. The death rate is 14 percent lower for those who eat spicy food six to seven times a week. This makes people eat more spicy food to make their health better. So don’t worry if you love spicy food. It seems that chilies are really good for us.

Can you refuse (拒绝) junk food? Are you worried that you are getting heavier and heavier? Do you want to eat more healthily? Can you find a good way to help you?

Try Food Trainer! This app is also called Food T. A group of IT scientists from the UK made it. It may help you through a game.

In the free game, healthy food always appears in green circles and unhealthy food always comes in red circles. Some other everyday things, such as pencils and sweaters, appear in the green or red circles. Once a user taps on (点击) a thing in the green circle, he or she gets a point. But tapping on a thing in the red circle gets a point deducted (扣除).

Does this simple game work well? The scientists invited more than 1,200 people to play the game once a day. After a month, the people reported their changes. Most of them said they started eating more healthy food. Some people ate junk food two to four times a week before. At the end of the study, they only ate it once a week. Most people lost more than half a kilogram of weight.

Why does the app work so well? It’s because it uses brains training techniques (大脑训练技术) to make people less interested in junk food. Through practice, the users of the app put the brakes (刹车) on in the head when they see junk food. This helps users say no to unhealthy food in their daily lives!

Is it amazing that we spend so much time talking about food? “ Have you ever eaten…?”“ What did you have for lunch?” and so on.

And yet when you travel from one country to another, you will find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most parts of Asia, for example, no meal is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day.

The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don’t like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw(生的) fish.

So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change

1.Where do people usually have rice as their main food?
