| Topic: Should kids do housework?
Share your ideas! |
| Anna March 15 2025, 10:00 a.m.
Hey everyone! I’m trying to understand how you share housework in your family. Do you think kids should help with it? What’s your story? Let’s discuss! |
| Emily March 15, 2025, 10:30 a.m.
I don’t think it’s right to let our parents do all the housework because we live in the same house: Doing housework makes me feel independent, as I learn to use my time well and take care of myself. And I see it as a way to show my parents how thankful I’m for everything they do. I don’t mind making the bed or doing the dishes. |
| Grace March 15, 2025, 10:43 a.m.
As a mother of two, I understand that sometimes kids might see doing housework as an additional burden (额外负担). I encourage my daughter and son to help with housework because it helps them build a sense of responsibility. I always ask my kids for their ideas and this helps them do housework happily. |

Many people think heirlooms (传家宝) are expensive things. However, Sara doesn’t think so. She has a few heirlooms. Anyone can buy them in a shop. However, they are special to her because they belonged to her grandmother.
After Sara’s grandmother died, her family chose something of hers to keep to remember her. As Sara lived far away, her mother picked things out for her—a tablecloth, a mirror, and an old pot. Sara kept these things, but she didn’t use them much, The tablecloth didn’t fit her tables. She didn’t like the color of the mirror frame (镜框), and the pot was too small and old.
Sara’s life changed when she read something in a book: Don’t keep anything in your house that you don’t find useful or beautiful. That’s right. “But what about sentimental (情感的) things like heirlooms? They’re beautiful if they remind us of good times with loved ones,” Sara thought.
Sara decided to give these things a fresh start. She painted the mirror frame a different color to go with her daughter’s room. Although Sara’s daughter never met her grandmother, they share a connection through the mirror. Sara bought a table to go with her grandmother’s tablecloth. A new study shows this: children with friends of a different gender (性别) or from other races (种族) are kinder. They are more likely to act kindly toward classmates who are different from them. Having many kinds of friends can help kids understand and care more about each other.
The study looked at 603 children from schools in the southwestern United States. The children were between 7 and 11 years old. About half of the children were from different racial groups.
For the study, the researchers asked the children to name their best friends. They also asked who they thought were the most helpful classmates. The results showed something interesting. Children with more friends of a different gender were often more helpful. For example, if a boy had many girl friends, the girls in his class thought he was kind and helpful.
The same thing happened with race. Kids who had friends from other races were more likely to be seen as kind by classmates from different racial groups. The study also found that having friends of a different gender made kids more likely to be kind to classmates from other races. But just having friends of other races did not always help them be kinder to classmates of a different gender—unless they also had friends of that gender.
Sonya Xinyue Xiao, one of the researchers, said her own experiences made her want to do the study. “I was the ‘new’ kid during primary school, middle school, and high school,” she said. She wants to keep learning how children grow to be kind.
