Do Animals Really Sleep for Winter?

For people who don’t like winter, animals that hibernate (冬眠) seem to have a great idea. But is hibernation the same as sleeping?

Well, in fact, animals that hibernate don’t “sleep” during the winter. Hibernation is very different from what happens when you sleep. During hibernation, metabolism (新陈代谢) slows down greatly. When lemurs (狐猴) hibernate, for example, they slow their heart rates (心率). An active lemur’s heart beats about 200 times a minute. During hibernation, it beats less than eight times a minute. Its breathing (呼吸) slows down too. Hibernating lemurs can go ten minutes without taking a breath. Their brain activity becomes very slow. During sleep, however, animals continue to breathe as usual.

According to scientists, hibernation is a way for animals to save energy. However, animals that live in cold areas are not the only ones to hibernate. Some animals hibernate to keep away from hot weather. For some, hibernation is not because of temperatures. Some animals hibernate when there is no food. Echidnas (针鼹), for example, will hibernate after fires. They won’t go back to usual activities until food grows back. Some animals hibernate to stay safe. Animals don’t smell or move much when they hibernate. This makes it hard for other animals to find them and eat them.

There are many mammals (哺乳动物) that hibernate. Most of them are small—weigh less than 90 grams. Little animals usually lose heat quickly. It is hard for them to stay warm in winter, so they need to save more energy than larger animals do.

We human beings (人类) don’t need hibernation. So, don’t be lazy and lie in bed all day long during the coming winter holiday!

19.What do animals do during hibernation according to the passage?

A.They stop breathing.

B.They become much thinner.

C.They slow their brain activity.

D.They breathe more than 8 times a minute.

20.Which picture can show the changes of the heart rates during the animals’ hibernation?

21.What does the writer show by using the example of echidnas?

A.Hibernation is different from sleeping

B.Most mammals don’t need hibernation.

C.Metabolism slows down during hibernation.

D.Hibernation isn’t always caused by temperatures.

22.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing this passage?

A.To tell people more about hibernation.

B.To tell why human beings don’t need hibernation.

C.To tell young people how to save energy in winter.

D.To list the differences between hibernation and sleeping.

C

If you asked scientists whether monkeys and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) had a sense (感觉) of right and wrong before they had a deep study on them, they would tell you that it seemed not possible.

It was believed that only humans could imagine (想象) the future. Some people said that most monkeys were cleverer than most dogs. What’s more, if dogs seemed unhappy when they did something bad, some people believed that dogs learnt such an action to make their owners happy. It doesn’t mean that dogs understand why their owners are angry. It doesn’t mean that animals can think about the future.

Now, however, it appears that chimpanzees and monkeys may be able to think about the future. Santino is a chimpanzee and he lives at a zoo in Sweden. He is famous for his bad mood. Santino doesn’t like being looked at by visitors and he often throws stones at them. Before visitors walk into the zoo, he must have decided if he is prepared for visiting days. He begins collecting stones so that he is fully ready to throw them when people come to see him. The interesting thing is that Santino would only collect stones when he thinks visitors might come. In winter when the zoo is closed, he doesn’t collect them.

Santino’s action is a clear example of an animal planning for the future. It’s also an example to show “scientific” beliefs come from facts rather than opinions (观点). It seems likely that within ten years, we shall have a completely different view of animal intelligence (智慧).

23.What did scientists think of animals before?

A.They could think about the future.      B.They couldn’t understand their owners.

C.They couldn’t know the right and wrong.    D.They could share people’s happiness and sadness.

24.Why does Santino collect many stones?

A.Because he wants to build a wall.        B.Because he likes to play with stones.

C.Because the keeper asks him to do so.  D.Because he wants to throw them at visitors.

25.Which paragraph gives an example to show animals can also plan for the future?

A.Paragraph 1.  B.Paragraph 2.        C.Paragraph 3.         D.Paragraph 4.

26.What does the writer want to tell us?

A.Monkeys are much cleverer than dogs.

B.Dogs can understand their owners’ feelings.

C.Only human-like animals can think about the future.

D.We should use facts to show truth instead of opinions.

Fish babies in space (太空)? What surprising news! In a space study on zebra fish, Chinese scientists have set a new record. They successfully got four zebra fish to live and grow healthily in a closed water world.

The zebra fish went to China’s space station on the Shenzhou XIII spaceship on 25th April, 2024. Since then, they have been living in a closed fish tank (缸) with some plants. The fish grew up and had babies in 43 days. It means that the fish completed a whole life stage, from growth to development and giving babies.

In their special closed environment, the plants made air for the fish and the fish’s waste gave the plants food. The scientists gave the fish food through a special needle (针管).

Such a closed environment is important for future studies in space. It means that plants and animals can live in space more easily.

The scientists also found that the zebra fish acted differently in space. For example, they often swam on their backs in space. The low gravity (重力) in space is a big reason. However, on Earth, gravity pulls everything to the Earth’s centre, and animals can find their way easily. Gravity also makes their bodies work harder and become stronger.

It isn’t the first time fish have been sent into space. Zebra fish were earlier sent to the space station in 1976. Why do scientists choose zebra fish? Humans and zebra fish share 70 per cent of the same genes (基因). So the new finding will help scientists better understand human health and human diseases.

27.What do we know about the space study?

A.There were more than four zebra fish at last.

B.It took scientists less than one month to finish the study.

C.It took place in an open fish tank.

D.Scientists from different countries did it together.
