Should School Start Later?
Since 2018, the Chinese education departments have already made a rule that primary and middle schools should start later in the morning. Studies show that when schools start before 8:30 AM, students often get less than the recommended 8~10 hours of sleep. Not having enough sleep can lead to poor concentration (专注), lower grades, and even health problems. We asked four students and an expert about school starting time. Here’s what they said:
Lina, 13 (Shanghai)
“Waking up at 6:30 AM leaves me tired. My first class is math, but I can’t focus. Studies show teens’ brains work best after 10 AM. Later starts would help us learn better.”
Jay, 12 (Shenzhen)
“I disagree. Starting at 7:30 AM means we finish by 4 PM. This gives us enough time for my basketball practice and robot club. If school started later, I’d miss these important activities!”
Ming, 14 (Beijing)
“The real problem is homework! I stay up until 11 PM finishing homework. Even if school started later. I’d still be tired. We need less homework, not later starts.”
Emma, 11 (Guangzhou)
“My school moved start time from 7:40 to 8:20 AM last term. Now I eat breakfast properly and feel more awake. Our test scores improved 5% too!”
Dr. Chen (Sleep Expert)
“Teenagers’ biological clocks (生物钟) are different from adults’. When school starts before 8:30 a.m., it’s like making adults work at 5 a.m. This causes sleep loss, affecting memory and health.”
16. According to the studies, what problem can early school start time cause?
A. Better concentration.
B. Lower grades and health problems.
C. More time for breakfast.
D. Higher test scores.
17. What can we know from Jay’s opinion?
A. He prefers to sleep late. B. He values after-school activities.
C. He doesn’t like math class. D. He wants more homework.
18. What does Ming think is the real problem affecting students’ sleep?
A. Early school starts. B. Too much homework.
C Lack of breakfast. D. No after-school activities.
19. What is the author’s main purpose in using the comparison (对比) “When schools start before 8:30 a.m., it’s like making adults work at 5 a.m.”?
A. To show early school time is bad for students.
B. To say school times are good now.
C. To tell students to sleep in class.
D. To explain biological clock differences.
20. Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Emma’s school saw better test scores after changing start time.
B. Dr. Chen says teenagers have the same biological clocks as adults.
C. Lina has trouble focusing on math class.
D. Jay is a member of the robot club.

In July 1950, a big flood happened in the Huaihe River area. It brought great suffering to over 13 million people in Henan and Anhui provinces. When Chairman Mao heard about the bad news, he quickly made a big decision—to build the Foziling Dam (大坝), the very first dam in New China. China has a long history of building water projects, and water power has been important to China for over 2,000 years.
One of the oldest projects, Dujiangyan in Sichuan Province, built in 256 BC. Before Christ, still works today. Unlike dams that stop overs, it uses nature to control floods and water the farmland, turning Sichuan into the “Land of Abundance (天府之国)”. Later, the Grand Canal (京杭大运河), the world’s longest man-made waterway, linked northern and southern China, making trade and farming faster and easier.
In modern times, China is a world leader in waterpower. The Three Gorges Dam (三峡坝), the world’s largest power station, makes clean electricity and stop floods. Another huge one, BaihetanDam, uses new technology to make more energy with less pollution These big dams do many good things—they store water from causing floods, produce electricity, help boats travel and bring tourists, making life better for many people.
Looking to the future, China will build more dams in Tibet’s Yarlung Tsangpo River (西藏雅鲁藏布江) area. Old dams will get new smart improvements too. These include computer-controlled water systems, automatic flood gates and cleaner power machines. The new technology makes dams work better while keeping nature safe.
In short, all these dams and canals help people in many ways. China will keep building better water projects for the future.
