II. 完形填空。(共10小题,每小题1.5分,计15分。)

When we watch movies about the future, we sometimes see robots. They are usually like    16    servants. They help with the housework and do jobs like working in dirty or dangerous places.

Today there are already robots    17    in factories. Some can help build cars, and they do simple jobs over and over again.    18    people will do such jobs in the future because they are boring, but robots will never get bored.

Scientists are now trying to make robots look like humans and do the same thing as we do. Some robots in Japan can walk and dance. They are fun to watch.    19   , some scientists believe that although we can make robots move like people, it will be    20    to make them really think like a human.

For example, scientist James White thinks that robots will never be able to wake up and know where they are. But many scientists disagree    21    Mr. White. They think that robots will even be able to talk like humans in 25 to 50 years.

Some scientists believe that there will    22    more robots in the future. However, they agree it may take    23    of years. These new robots will have many different shapes. Some will look like humans, and others might look like animals. In India, for example, scientists made robots that look like snakes.

If buildings fall down with people inside, these snake robots can help    24    people under the buildings. This was not possible 20 years ago, but computers and rockets also seemed impossible 100 years ago. We never know what    25    in the future!

Many companies have created apps to help blind people. Google has created an app that allows blind people to run alone.

Thomas Panek, the CEO of Guiding Eyes for the Blind, loved running. But he started losing his eyesight(视力) when he was 8, and by his early 20s he was totally blind. Later in life, he started running with other people or his guide dog. But he didn’t like depending on others.

In 2019, Panek asked some experts whether they could create something to help blind people run on their own. The Google team soon created an app called Project Guideline. The app can recognize a line painted on the ground with a smartphone camera. Through headphones (耳机), the app makes sounds when a person moves away from the line. The sounds get louder in either the left ear or the right ear when the person moves further away from the line.

After the app came out, Panek tried it. “For the first time, I didn’t feel like a blind man. I felt free,” Panek said. In November, 2020, Panek successfully ran 5 kilometers around New York City’s Central Park by using the app.

Panek hopes the app Project Guideline can help more people like him. And Google will also continue to work hard to develop the app.

Humans have dreamed about flying cars for a long time and finally they are being made. A German company is making the Lilium Jet(喷气式飞机)—the first fast, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly jet for personal use.

The pros (赞成理由) of this jet are that it doesn’t use much space and is quiet. It’s made so that it doesn’t need an airport, which is big and noisy. It’s also very good for people who live far from an airport. Last, flying it and getting a license (执照) are not difficult.

The jet can carry two people and fly as fast as 400 km/h. It can fly up to 9,900 feet high, and travel as far as 310 miles. For taking off and landing, it only needs a small area, so you can park it in your yard. Once in your yard, it can be charged (充电) from your house.

Since one of the goals of the jet is to be environmentally friendly, it is 100% electric. So it is a lot quieter and cleaner. The jet has 36 fans (风扇). Even if several die, it can still fly.

To fly the jet, you only need 20—30 hours of training. The price of the jet will be about 340, 000 USD.However, it can only be used during daytime hours in fair weather.

People need robots. Robots can go where people cannot go. This is because robots do not need air to breathe. They do not need to eat. They can go where it is very hot or very cold. Robots that go where people cannot go can bring back important information.

People can’t go to Mars yet, but robots can. A robot went to Mars in 1997. It took pictures of rocks and soil. It sent the pictures back to the earth. Scientists thought this was very exciting. They were able to learn many things about Mars. The things they learned helped them understand how our own planet works.

People can’t walk inside volcanoes. Volcanoes are too hot. To make a map of a volcano, scientists used a robot. The robot found out what gases burn inside the volcano. Scientists think this will help them learn about volcanoes.

Robots are amazing machines. They give people information. They help people understand the world we live in.
