I’m Patrick Williams, from Suzhou Student Post. This is the column (栏目) where you can tell me what you would like to change about yourself. Welcome to leave your messages.
| Zhang Yao
What I want to change about myself most is my attitude (态度) toward life. Sometimes, I take things too seriously. Once, I thought I did badly in an exam. I became very sad and lost confidence in any other exam. It turned out it was not as bad as I thought. I wish I could be happier about everything! 18 2 |
|
| Li Jing
I want to change my bad temper (脾气) most. I get angry too easily, and hurt the people I love. For example, when my mom cares about me, I often complain she talks too much. Sometimes, I even fight with her. But deep down, I know she loves me a lot. I shouldn’t behave like that. I really want to work on my temper and be kinder to the people I love. 15 5 |

I am also afraid that my classmates will laugh at me. If I had smaller teeth like other people, I would be very happy. 10 1 |

When I got to school this morning, I ran into Wendy. She greeted me with a big yawn (哈欠). “Sorry, I didn’t sleep well last night. Two mosquitoes (蚊子) kept me up. I tried to catch them but had no luck. I hate them!”
I showed a cartoon (on the right) to Wendy. She laughed. “That’s funny. Now my sleepiness is all gone! Who drew this?” “Xiao Lin, or Lin Dihuan,” I said. “I like his cartoons. They lift you up when you’re feeling down.”
Xiao Lin loved painting from an early age. But his family was poor. Instead of getting a professional (专业的) art education, the boy taught himself to draw at the age of fourteen. He bought books and magazines from recycling centers and copied the pictures from them. He began drawing for magazines when he was in middle school. In college, Lin studied medicine at his father’s suggestion, but his love for art remained. After graduation, he chose to teach art instead of working as a doctor. Lin hasn’t let his medical studies go to waste, though. His knowledge about medicine often inspires (赋予灵感) new ideas for his artworks.
Lin spends a lot of time drawing every day. While his funny cartoons have received widespread attention and inspired many, they are just a small part of his work. Lin’s drawings often cover traditional Chinese culture. Many people got to know him through his ink-and-brush paintings (水墨画) of China’s 24 Solar Terms (二十四节气). The artist has also used cartoons to introduce young people to ancient Chinese classics. As some of these works have been published and displayed in the West, they have also made foreigners interested in Chinese culture.
No matter what Lin draws, you feel relaxed when you see it. Sometimes, we just need to turn to artworks like his for a different take on the world.
| Last night, I fought hard with a mosquito, and it ended in a draw (平局) — I lost sleep while it missed its meal. |
